The Department of Fisheries Economy reported that in the
first five months of 2014 190,561 tonnes of seafood exports
reached USD 518.5 million, that is to say, 3 per cent more
in volume and 9.2 per cent more in value than in the same
period of 2013.
Under the new Situation Report prepared by the Department,
only in May 2014 the country exported 54,949 tonnes of
fishery resources for USD 128.2 million, 16.9 per cent more
in volume and 7.1 per cent more in value than in the fifth
month of 2013.
Based on the data provided by the National Institute of
Statistics and Census (INDEC), the Department indicated
that in the first five months of this year 65,456 tonnes of
shellfish were sent abroad for USD 115.7 million.
In addition, 47,410 tonnes of frozen fish were exported --
except fillets -- for USD 85 million; 39,082 tonnes of
fillets and other fish meat for USD 119.5 million; 25,620
tonnes of shellfish worth USD 174.8 million, among other
items.
Meanwhile, between 1 January and 31 May, Argentina exported
46,095 tonnes of hake (Merluccius hubbsi) for USD 113.6
million, figures representing inter-annual increases of 8.8
per cent in volume and 7.1 per cent in value.
In the first five months of this year 23,907 tonnes of
shrimp (Pleoticus muelleri) were also sent abroad for USD
162.4 million. These results reflect substantial increases
over the same period of 2013: a 106.9 per cent increase in
volume and 146.5 per cent in value.
In addition, 63,119 tonnes of squid (Illex argentinus) were
exported for USD 89.4 million, that is to say, 8 per cent
less in volume and 31.2 per cent less in value than during
January and May 2013.
Other resources exported by Argentina in the first five
months of 2014 were:
•Hoki (Macruronus magellanicus): 4,798 tonnes worth USD
10.8 million;
•Freshwater stingray (Potamotrygon brachyura): 4,654 tonnes
worth USD 7.9 million;
•Whitemouth croaker (Micropogonias furnieri): 6,339 tonnes
worth USD 8.3 million;
•Patagonian scallop (Zygochlamys patagonica): 2,337 tonnes
worth USD 26.3 million.
With regard to imports of fishery resources, the report
issued by the Directorate details that 14,168 tonnes were
imported for USD 63 million between January and May this
year.
